One of my passions over the past year has been the beginning of my journey toward accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I’ve been a member of the Academy for nearly three years and have travelled to both Chicago and Las Vegas for the annual meetings. Last year in Chicago I took and passed the written accreditation exam, the first step toward becoming accredited with the Academy. Currently there are less than 350 dentists worldwide who are accredited by the AACD. My next step will be to begin to complete and thoroughly document the 5 required case types for accreditation.
This journey began two years ago when I took three 4 day trips to the UCLA Dental School to attend the UCLA Esthetic Continuum with Dr. Brian LeSage. Dr. LeSage is one of the most prominent members of the Academy and is both accredited and is a fellow in the organization. At UCLA I began to learn about all aspects of cosmetic dentistry, including treatment planning, material selection, tooth preparation design, color evaluation, and photography, just to name a few. Becoming efficient in intraoral digital photography has been challenging, but in two years we have come a long way with our photography. The AACD’s rather strict standards for photography have driven us to improve each and every day. Improvement is the name of the game.
I am excited for this journey toward accreditation and to become the preeminent cosmetic dentist in the Kansas City area over the next decade.
